Spain 2016: Dinner With a View & Jazz

image

Early in the trip, Linda and George suggested that we eat at a great restaurant nearby where there was a lovely view and live jazz on Friday evenings. It turned out the group – Jazzify, which George’s saxophone teacher is part of – weren’t there on Friday this week but Saturday instead. It was a short drive, the final part down a steep and narrow road, to Cala Advocat (above). It was a lovely, peaceful setting. We parked the car and then climbed a long flight of stairs to the restaurant and were rewarded with a fabulous view.

The jazz group were already playing. They were brilliant; it was a real treat to hear such good jazz musicians live and their singer had a great voice. They played classics, nothing experimental, but it was appropriate to the setting and wonderful to hear.

La Paillote restaurant and bar is part of a boutique hotel. George thought it was run by Belgians; certainly the menu was more French than Spanish. Linda and I decided to share a starter of prawns with garlic and parsley (George wasn’t having a starter). But first they brought the typical Spanish appetizer of bread and tomato and alioli to begin – but noticeably rolls rather than the more usual Spanish toast.

They were lovely bread rolls. Soon our prawns came. They looked fantastic. They tasted fantastic.

It was such a simple dish but well done. For my main I’d chosen grilled sea bream.

This was excellent. The sea bream had been cooked perfectly wih lovely crispy skin but moist tender fish. It was presented beautifully with good and well prepared vegetables. I enjoyed the meal a lot. So much in fact that I couldn’t resist a dessert – even though Linda and George did.

My cheesecake was delicious and accompanied by fruit coulis and cream.

By the time we left it was dark. The live jazz had ended but down below at a cafe by the beach, music and a salsa class was starting up. Linda seemed keen to join the dancing but it was late so we headed for home.

It was a great evening of fine food, beautiful location and the loveliest of friends.
