The Single Gourmet Traveller’s Brula Menu

September 14, 2013

It was great to go along to Brula today and enjoy my blog’s meal: their exclusive menu on offer to followers of The Single Gourmet and Traveller and running until 5 October. Annie and Jerry were coming to Richmond from north London this morning to support their daughter Romilly who is doing a 100km walk for charity and was passing along the Richmond towpath at about 11.00 am. They thought it was a perfect opportunity to try the Brula menu at lunchtime and asked me to join them. They’d not been to Brula before and loved the interior.

The menu is 3 courses plus a welcoming cocktail for £19.50. There was a choice of cocktail. I choice the Pimms Royale – Pimms & Cremant – while Annie and Jerry went for Melba Fizz – Peach Juice, Prosecco & Framboise.

It felt extremely decadent to be drinking cocktails on a Saturday lunchtime, but the weather was so miserable outside it immediately brought a ray of sunshine and cheer. And what cheerful cocktails they were: fresh and fruity and very delicious. The came with a basket of French bread and some butter.

For starters, Annie and I chose Chicken Liver Parfait & Onion Marmalade while Jerry had Salad of Gem Lettuce, Anchovy, Parmesan & Croutons. This came looking spectacular in a wonderful mound. The parfait came with a thick slice of brioche toast that was brilliant with it.

They were very good. I thought the parfait was delicious: it was so light and creamy and very tasty, lovely on the brioche and with a little of the onion marmalade. Jerry chose Brula Steak Frites with Garlic Butter for his main and had a glass of red wine to go with it. The waitress was lovely throughout and so helpful and pointed to the wines available by the glass and said the Cote de Rhone would be nice with the steak and Jerry went for that and enjoyed it.

Annie and I decided the cocktails were enough at lunchtime … though I should probably add that this was partly because we’d already had some Cava in a wine bar down by the river at 12.00 while watching the walkers! We chose the fish: Organic Plaice with Pine Kernels & Golden Raisins. This was really delicious and the fish served on some nice creamy, garlicky mash.

Dessert was included in the menu so we were going for it. Jerry and I had Creme Brûlée – a caramel topping that cracked perfectly with delicious creamy vanilla custard inside.

Annie meanwhile went for Blackberry Sorbet which she said was very good.

We finished with coffee: Americanos and espressos, served in pretty cups.

It was a delightful way to spend a Saturday lunchtime. The menu is also available in the evening. If you’d like to enjoy this special exclusive menu too before 5 October click here for more details. It’s a brilliant offer, a gorgeous meal and it was very exciting for me to go along and try it and be given a menu headed ‘The Single Gourmet Traveller’. And all credit and thanks to Lawrence Hartley and his team for making it work so well.

  1. Thank you, Kay, for organising this offer.

Heather and I spent the evening of our 33rd wedding anniversary there. Heather had the pate and creme brulee. I had the soup and cheese. We both had steak and frites – well we had just spent the weekend before in Paris and managed to avoid it there, so we had it here instead. The food was excellent. We both loved the room and its ambience.

I thought the alcohol was a tad pricey; although we did appreciate the apertif courtesy of your deal; £16.50 for a 500ml carafe of the good house wine isn’t inexpensive.

What most caught our eyes were: no lack of staff – there were lots, all capable and friendly, nothing hung about. And they were all female. Not a male member of staff was there to be seen.

Will we do it again? Yes. We’ll try lunch next time.

    • Thanks so much for letting me know, John, and congratulations to you and Heather for your anniversary. I’m pleased you enjoyed the meal and will pass your comments on to Lawrence – including the bit about the wine. I’m glad you enjoyed it enough to want to go again, too! I’m going again on the last evening with Linda and George who’ll be staying with me that week, after a long weekend (the three of us) in Istanbul. All best, Kay
